East Sussex Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee

Response to East Sussex Primary Care Trusts on
‘Creating an NHS Fit for the Future’
proposals for maternity, gynaecology and special
baby care services in East Sussex

Preface

This report represents the formal response of East Sussex Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee (HOSC) to East Sussex Downs and Weald and Hastings and Rother Primary Care Trusts’ consultation ‘Creating an NHS Fit for the Future’. This relates specifically to proposals to reconfigure maternity, gynaecology and special baby care services within East Sussex.

The Committee’s response is based on an extensive process of gathering both written and verbal evidence from a wide range of stakeholders. The evidence has covered a broad range of perspectives and arguments, at times in complete opposition to each other.

The Committee’s role has been to take an independent, balanced look at the proposals from a lay person’s perspective and to make judgements based on the evidence available. The report makes a number of recommendations to the PCTs and HOSC looks forward to receiving their response. The Committee will consider the PCTs’ response and decision in due course.

I would like to thank all the witnesses who made time to attend HOSC meetings and contribute their views and expertise and all those who attended to hear the evidence and discussion.

Councillor Sylvia Tidy
Chairman
East Sussex Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee
