An Open Letter from Councillor Stephen Sprinthorpe
As a Hastings councillor, I share your dismay at the scandalous decision arrived at by Cabinet on Monday. I think we have put Eastbourne Council in a great position now, as they need have no qualms about breaking the pact that was Hands off the Conquest.
We have shown a lack of integrity in breaking ranks. I think the whole point of this campaign has been to say no to ANY cuts. I recognise that this may not have great chance of success, but it was better than getting into what we have now handed the PCT on a plate, ie a straightforward choice between us and Eastbourne, especially coming at a time when other developments in services in the county have so strengthened the hand of Eastbourne.
It seems to me now quite likely that we are going to lose out on this, regardless of anything we say. So, in a way it doesn't matter what we say. However, we should at least show solidarity with the people who have fought so hard against cuts.
Regards,
Cllr Stephen Springthorpe
